Agenda of the international community for sustainable development in force since January 1st, 2016
Zurich, April 1, 2016 - A current evaluation of Toshiba's CO2 initiative Carbon Zero has shown that the program supports 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. With this, the international community wants to eradicate poverty by the end of 2030, promote equality between women, improve health care and counteract climate change. The SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set in 2000 and include a total of 169 objectives.
The Toshiba Carbon Zero program, which offsets the CO2 emissions of Toshiba multifunction systems, has been running across Europe for more than six years. A large number of projects are supported that support many of the UN's sustainability goals. These include CO2 balance projects such as the setting up of energy-efficient hotplates in Kenya or the renovation of boreholes in Uganda, which gives families access to clean drinking water.
Balancing the CO2 emissions of the Toshiba systems is therefore not the only objective of the Carbon Zero program. Toshiba has always selected projects that have a positive impact on people's lives and the environment, and is delighted to be able to actively support the UN's sustainability goals. The cooking range project in Kenya also contributes to many of these goals: it saves up to 50% firewood and at the same time significantly reduces smoke emissions, which significantly improves the quality of life of countless families in Kenya.
The program was evaluated by the CO2balance project developers who run the Carbon Zero program on behalf of Toshiba. This showed that the Toshiba Carbon Zero program directly meets six of the UN sustainability goals and actively supports another eight of the 17 SDGs.
About the Toshiba Carbon Zero program
In Switzerland, Toshiba Tec launched the Carbon Zero Initiative to support global environmental projects in June 2010. Together with the experts from the cooperation partner CO2balance, a system was developed that not only compensates for the CO2 generated during the entire life cycle of the A3 multifunction system, but also compensates for the corresponding amount of the first 250,000 pages produced. The most important projects supported include the hob project in Kenya and the borehole project in Uganda.
